Our church story

The Parish of St. Winifred's belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford.

The foundation stone of the present church was laid on 17 June 1950 by Bishop Henry Vincent Marshall, Bishop of Salford.  On the 12th August 1951, the Church was dedicated to St. Winifred, blessed and opened by Bishop Marshall.  On 9th January 1952, the parish of St. Winifred was canonically erected.

In January 1959, the new presbytery was built to link up with the church.  The parish centre was built in 1982 and dedicated as the Kavanagh Centre, in honour of Fr. Kavanagh, the Parish Priest.

In September 1985, Fr. Patrick Crowley, was appointed as Parish Priest.  Fr. Kavanagh who was in ill health continued as parish emeritus at St. Winifred’s.  In 1986 the Sanctuary was re-ordered and on 12th December 1986, Bishop Patrick Kelly consecrated the Church and new altar on its 25th anniversary.

Fr. Kavanagh died peacefully on 26th July 1990.  Fr. Patrick Crowley continued as Parish Priest for eighteen years.  He died on 20th February 2003 among his family in Cork.  On Palm Sunday 2003, Monsignor Quinlan arrived as Parish Priest.

To celebrate 60 years of St. Winifred’s Church, a Mass of Thanksgiving took place on 3rd November 2011.
